Suzuki Across: a hybrid SUV built for real life

The Suzuki Across doesn’t try to do too much. It focuses on what matters: a strong design, efficient powertrain, and a well-thought-out cabin. The result is a C-segment SUV that handles both daily commutes and long journeys with ease, a model that speaks directly to South African families looking for a reliable, modern vehicle.
Its design
From the first glance, the Across commands attention. Its silhouette is fluid and well-proportioned, with clean lines that give it real character. At the front, the styling makes a statement. Slim LED headlights connected by a chrome strip immediately draw the eye. The wide grille and carefully crafted details reinforce an impression of robustness. The bumper, with its aluminium-effect finish, adds an adventurous edge.
On the sides, black plastic cladding and well-defined wheel arches serve as a reminder that this SUV is ready to handle varied road conditions. The 17-inch alloy wheels, which vary by trim level, add a sporty touch.
At the rear, the lighting signature is modern. An LED strip running the full width of the vehicle creates a striking visual effect, especially at night. The look is completed by a small spoiler and a shark fin antenna. In terms of colours, the range is broad, from understated shades to bolder choices. GLX versions even offer two-tone finishes with a black roof for a more distinctive look.
Its interior
Inside, the Across prioritises simplicity. The design is clean, free of unnecessary elements. Everything is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. The dashboard is well laid out, with decent materials and tidy finishes. Controls fall naturally to hand, particularly the climate controls.
For everyday use, practicality is very much present. There are multiple storage compartments, cupholders, a large central armrest, and fold-down rear seats. The boot also offers generous capacity for luggage.
Modern equipment is well represented: wireless charging, USB-C ports, 12V sockets, and even the ability to power accessories such as a portable fridge, which is handy on long journeys.
Two trim levels to suit every need
The Suzuki Across is available in two versions: GL and GLX.
The GL trim already offers a solid level of equipment. It includes a digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a rear-view camera. Comfort is taken care of with automatic climate control, fabric seats, and a multifunctional adjustable steering wheel.
Safety is comprehensive, with six airbags, ABS, ESP, and hill-start assist. This version suits those looking for a reliable, modern, and accessible SUV.
The GLX trim steps things up considerably. The interior feels more premium, with leatherette upholstery and ventilated front seats. The technology package is more advanced: a head-up display, a quality audio system, a 360° camera, and customisable ambient lighting. The panoramic roof also adds a welcome sense of space.
On the safety front, the driver assistance systems are extensive. Adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring all contribute to greater peace of mind behind the wheel.

An economical mild-hybrid powertrain
Under the bonnet, the Across features the K15C petrol engine paired with mild-hybrid technology. This system supports the combustion engine during certain driving phases, particularly at start-up or during acceleration. It also recovers energy under braking for reuse later.
In practical terms, this translates into controlled fuel consumption of around 5.3 l/100 km, and reduced emissions — an important advantage in a context where fuel costs remain a major concern in South Africa.
The start/stop system rounds things off by cutting the engine when stationary, such as in traffic. On the transmission side, the GL version offers a choice between manual and automatic gearboxes, while the GLX comes exclusively with an automatic.
The Suzuki Across ticks a lot of boxes. It is spacious, well-equipped, and above all economical to run. Its ground clearance and exterior protection also make it a solid companion on South Africa’s sometimes demanding roads. For families, it is a logical choice. It delivers comfort, safety, and genuine everyday versatility.

Good evening everyone, I'm considering the Series 1 mainly for urban use. Is the suspension comfort not too stiff over speed bumps and cobblestones?
Indeed, the suspension is quite firm. For urban use, it really depends on how well you tolerate bumps!
